27% saving on gas prices for Scottish fish and chips business
The business owners of this takeaway business knew they weren’t getting a good price from their gas supplier, EON. They asked us to get the best price we could find in the gas market at the time.
Relatively high gas users, around 140,000 kWh per year, we were able to reduce their annual takeaway gas costs by £1,600.
Fish and Chip takeaway gas and electricity rates
We are often asked “what will my gas and electricity costs to be for a fish and chip shop?” You will need to consider the amount of gas and electricity that is likely to be used by the business, as well as the cost of energy.
Gas and electricity rates will vary depending where you are located. At the time of writing, these could be around 2.75p – 3.25p per kWh for gas and 12p – 13p per kWh for electricity. With a standing charge from zero to £100 per year.
You can appreciate the amount of energy used by a fish and chip shop can be very different from one site to the next. Consider opening hours, how long fryers are operating for, and the size (is there a seated restaurant as well for example). All these factors will determine the gas and electricity used.
We have looked at the annual energy use of the many Fish and Chips businesses we work with:
A small to mid-range fish and chip shop could use between 15,000 – 60,000 kWh of electricity per year. And 40,000 – 150,000 kWh of gas per year. Larger sites could use considerably more.
Typical energy costs for Fish and Chip business:
Gas £1,100 – £4,900
Electricity £1,875 – £7,500
As you can see, costs can vary considerably depending on your energy consumption and size of premises. These are very rough figures and should only be used to give an indication of costs if you are starting up a fish and chip takeaway business. The price per kWh of gas and electricity, can be higher or lower than quoted above.
You should also read the section below on meters with different rates at Evenings and Weekends.
Interested in going green? We’ve got that covered too.
In the minds of business owners, green energy is still very expensive compared to the standard offer. As such, we are rarely asked by takeaway owners to provide green options.
However, alongside the standard energy rates on our price sheets, we will often add a green option as well. Business owners in general, are often surprised at how close in price green and standard energy has become.
And this includes green gas as well as electricity!
If you choose green gas or electricity, you can promote this to your customers. And build beneficial relationships with similar minded businesses.
Got the correct electricity meter for the hours you are open?
The estimates above assume you have a single rate electricity meter. This is good if your takeaway is busy throughout the day. However, not so good if you are usually open in the evening and at weekends. And rarely during the day (before 6pm or 7pm).
If this is the case, we can arrange for your electricity supplier to install a meter with different rates for different times of the day. Your Weekday rate for electricity will be higher than the single rate in the above example. Which should be fine if you are open for a short time during this period.
The benefit lies in the considerably lower rate for Evening and Weekends (and Night). This lower rate will apply from 7pm (usually) through to 6am or 7am Monday to Friday. And 24 hours a day at Weekends.
How much is the lower rate? Again, it can vary depending on location. You can expect it to be around 8p or 9p per kWh.
This can save your takeaway a tidy sum on electricity bills.
