Get the best price for your gas contract
Gas accounts for 60-70% of energy costs in schools. This is mainly through heating classrooms, but also heating the hot water and there is an element of catering use as well.
The rate you pay for school gas prices depends on many factors. These include:
- the price of wholesale gas when you confirm your contract
- distribution and shipping costs of gas for your region,
- network charges for maintaining and operating the network of pipes
- government taxes and levies
- VAT
The wholesale price of gas is influenced by national and world events that affect supply and demand. Gas prices loosely follow the price of oil, so this can also lead to swings in gas prices.
Save money on your gas contract with our market knowledge
Using a framework or group agency means you are often limited to one or two gas suppliers.

Lower your school gas costs
We work with many schools, and as well as optimising the price they pay for gas, we strongly recommend reviewing the gas use throughout the school.
Heating class rooms is roughly 50% of the entire school energy spend. Therefore, this needs to be managed carefully. Here are some straightforward tips that don’t require a cost outlay:
Ensure temperatures are not too high
DfES guidance notes recommend 18C for classrooms and 15C for corridors. Temperatures higher than this can also reduce attentiveness during lessons. Ask staff and pupils to report any rooms that are too hot or too cold. You could appoint an energy monitor for each class.
Check times the heating comes on and goes off
Having classrooms at 18C an hour before school starts, and an hour or two afterwards, is a waste of money. You can set the heating to go off shortly before school finishes each day. Room temperatures won’t suddenly plummet, the heat will disperse gradually. Saving 5-7 hours a week could save a considerable sum over a year.
The Carbon Trust have produced a useful fact sheet to help you reduce your school energy consumption.
