I get lots of cold calls about the energy contract at my Newsagents
As a rule, we simply don’t cold call businesses. However, some energy companies and energy brokers will pester businesses with calls about energy contracts.
This can be incredibly frustrating and time consuming to deal with, especially when you have a Newsagent to run. It is important, however, to be wary of energy fraud.
Unfortunately, some unscrupulous brokers will repeatedly call Newsagents until they catch someone off guard. Before they know it, they are committed to a long contract, on prices that are not in the customers best interests. These energy prices can often be quite outrageous.
Until Ofgem ban verbal contracts, these people will continue to bombard small business owners with these nuisance calls.
You can try and get their details in order to make a complaint, but they are unlikely to provide any. Some will even pretend they are from your energy company.
You can register your details with the Telephone Preference Service for businesses. Any company making a ‘cold call’ should check the number against this database first. And clearly not make the call if your number is listed.
If you have been duped into an energy contract for your Newsagents by one of these callers, please call us for advice.
My Newsagent energy contract seems to be very expensive
First of all, check if you are on a variable rate. Or deemed rates. This should be clearly outlined on your energy bill.
Once the energy contract at your Newsagent expires, you will move onto the variable rate from your supplier. Providing you haven’t agreed a new fixed price contract of course.
These variable rates can be much higher than your previous rates, so it is worth checking the latest invoice from your energy supplier. If in doubt, please call us on 020 3372 6517 and we will be happy to help.
Have you provided any meter readings to your energy supplier recently? Worth checking if you don’t have a smart meter. If you don’t send in any meter readings, your energy supplier has no choice but to guess how much gas or electricity you have used. They well have over-estimated your consumption.
If this is the case, just submit a meter reading (online, by email, or over the phone). This will be used on your next invoice. And if they have overestimated your consumption, you will have a nice credit on your account balance.
