MOP contract – a legal requirement
The most expensive way to pay for your MOP contract is to leave it to your electricity supplier. We can save you hundreds of pounds per year by arranging this with a Meter Operator for you.
A MOP contract covers maintenance and repair of the meter as well as the communication line to ensure no interruption of data. This is provided by a Meter Operator. It is a legal requirement for Half Hourly meters.

Who is my Meter Operator?
You will either have (a) arranged a MOP contract with a specialist Meter Operator, or (b) left your electricity supplier to appoint one. If your supplier has appointed their preferred meter operator, this will either be shown separately on your bill, or more likely, they will have hidden the costs in the standing charge. Be warned, your electricity supplier will mark up the Meter Operator costs considerably.
How much should a MOP contract cost?
We can recommend Meter Operators to take on your contract. The actual price will depend on the type of Half Hourly meter. The table below gives an indication of prices you can expect to be charged for your MOP contract:
For a Half Hourly meter that was upgraded due to P272
Our price from £153.55 per year for a 5-year contract
For COP 5 Half Hourly meter (typical KVA 100-999)
Our price from £231.00 per year for a 5-year contract
For COP 3 Half Hourly meter (typical KVA 1,000-9,999)
Our price from £320.50 per year for a 5-year contract
These prices include: Data collection, HH maintenance fee and SIM card rental.
A word of advice.
If you agree a MOP contract directly with your electricity supplier, they will usually charge a minimum of £300 per year, including data collection, for a 5-year contract. Or £500 to £600 for a 1-year contract. They add a huge mark up to the price the Meter Operator charges them.
How long does a MOP contract last for?
A typical MOP contracts lasts for 5 years, and is completely separate to your electricity supply contract. Your electricity supplier will look after your electricity billing, and a specialist meter operator will look after your Half Hourly meter and data.
If you change your electricity supplier after 2 years, your MOP remains in place and you don’t have to worry about it.
You can get shorter MOP contracts, but the cost per year increases significantly. As it is a legal requirement to have one, we recommend you choose a long-term option to save money.
