Larger business users of electricity can command lower commercial electricity rates. How much lower, depends who you work with.
Our lower commercial electricity rates
The electricity rates we obtain for our large business clients are consistently lower than they can find elsewhere. Either through another broker or by calling up electricity suppliers themselves.
In both instances, they are often checking prices from just a handful of energy suppliers.
At Perfect Clarity, we work with 20-25 commercial energy suppliers.
More choice = lower electricity prices
With an annual electricity use in excess of 500,000 kWh per year and more, (considerably more in many cases), it is essential you work with an energy partner who has access to more options.
We work alongside your business and are at the end of the phone if you have any questions relating to your commercial electricity supply. So important when you have many other responsibilities. Just let us know and we look into any supplier or billing issues for you, and report back when resolved.

Commercial electricity prices for Half Hourly meters
The majority of large businesses will have a Half Hourly meter for their electricity. Prices can be fixed or pass-through. And you will have Authorised Capacity charges, as well as Meter Operator and Data Collection costs.
If you are not familiar with these, we have detailed information about Half Hourly electricity meters here.
Please call us for more information and advice.
With your permission, we can check the half hourly data for your electricity meter(s) with your current electricity provider. The majority of these meters are priced by suppliers on Day and Night electricity rates.
However, it is worth us checking your electricity data to confirm the actual periods of higher use through the day and week. Through our business relationships with energy companies, some will be able to price on a single rate which might be better for your set up.
This flexibility gives your business more options to save on commercial electricity rates.
Electricity rates for businesses with multiple locations
If you are a national business, you will have a number of electricity meters spread over different sites across the country. Potentially with different suppliers and starting on different dates.
It may be beneficial to consolidate these contracts into one, with one commercial electricity supplier. This is something we can look into on your behalf and we will present a range of different options to you.
However, we will always bear in mind that electricity rates can vary in different regions from supplier to supplier. Contracting with one supplier may mean a higher average rate per kWh across the whole business.
It may be more cost effective for your business to align the start/end dates for each contract. And then pick and choose your electricity suppliers according to location. There could be a cost benefit in placing contracts for sites in the south east with one supplier. And another supplier for those in the north west, and so forth.
But this is something we can analyse in detail and number crunch on your behalf.

Are you a large business with several electricity meters at one site?
The likely solution will be to align the electricity contract end dates for you and place all meters with one supplier.
We will check the annual consumption of each meter. If one has a particularly low consumption compared to the others, this may actually increase the average price your business is charged for the other meters.
Again, leave the research to us. We will report back with the best solutions to save your business money.
Green electricity prices for a large business
Often thought of as too expensive to even consider, renewable electricity prices are now much more competitive. So much so, that businesses of all sizes are changing to renewable electricity.
Granted, the ‘green premium’ will see a larger increase in electricity costs the higher your consumption. But green electricity tariffs are not dissimilar in cost to brown tariffs.
We recommend looking into green options, even large-scale businesses. The actual increase in cost may not be as large as you expect. This will help you along the road to being a more sustainable business.
Increased CCL charge for commercial electricity
In April 2019, the CCL charge increased from 0.583p per kWh to 0.847p per kWh. Adding another 0.284p to each kWh of electricity consumed by your business.
For a large-scale business, this meant a substantial increase in electricity costs part-way through a contract.
From the table below, you can see that the CCL charge will fall back a little in the next couple of years.
Year | CCL rate per kWh |
---|---|
From 1 April 2018 | 0.583p |
From 1 April 2019 | 0.847p |
From 1 April 2020 | 0.811p |
From 1 April 2021 | 0.775p |
If your large-scale business holds a Climate Change Agreement, then you qualify for a sizeable discount on the Climate Change Levy.
